Wi-Fi in DLSU

A wireless LAN (WLAN) is a local area network (LAN) without wires. Meaning, it can transfer data through the air using radio frequencies instead of cables. The use of wireless networks have been around for more than a decade, but are just gaining popularity due to falling costs and improved standards. To highlight some of the thriving enhancement correlated to this technology, the high-frequency WLAN (or Hi-Fi WLAN) has been branded as "Wireless Fidelity" (or Wi-Fi).

Wi-Fi network inside DLSU allows students & employees to roam around the campus with a laptop (equipped with a wireless LAN card/adapter) and stay connected to their network wirelessly. In other words, this will allow a mobile user to connect to a local area network (LAN) through a wireless (radio) connection.

A wireless LAN adapter can be made to fit on a Personal Computer Memory Card Industry Association (PCMCIA) card for a laptop or notebook computer. A standard, IEEE 802.11, specifies the technologies for wireless LANs. Currently, DLSU is implementing Wi-Fi networks on 802.11b specifications. This IEEE standard for WLAN includes an encryption method, the Wi-Fi Protected Access or the WPA-capable 802.11i encryption algorithm, and can operate in the 2.4 GHz range offering data speeds up to 11 megabits per second.

Perhaps, if considered necessary, the DLSU Information Technology Center (ITC) will implement the better 802.11g standard (54 mbps) in the future.

Wi-Fi Set-up Procedures

There are several wireless access points at DLSU campus grounds. You need a computer with a wireless network card, and an operating system (OS) with the proper network configuration. To set-up your Wi-Fi, choose any of the following unit:

For PDAs and mobile phones, the DLSU Wi-Fi network implements 802.1x authentication. If your mobile device does not support this, please contact your supplier.

Note: this is for the DLSU-Manila community only.
